Q. What Is Grout?
A. Grout or "joint fillers" are the materials that fill the spaces (joints) between ceramic and stone tiles. Manufacturers produce various colors of this, which, in turn, are designed to accent all tile installations. Most grouts are Portland cement based and come in two basic textures, "sanded" and "non-sanded" (joint width determines which is used). Portland cement grouts are "solid" and "porous" and are susceptible to cracking and staining. -
Q. What Is USTAINIT & what does it do to grout?
A. USTAINIT is a low-cost solution to give grout a new look by changing the color of the grout and give that old tiled surface a fresh new appearance without replacing or re-grouting the tile's joints. Q. Where Do I Use USTAINIT?
A. USTAINIT can be used on sanded and non-sanded grout joints in ceramic and stone tile installations. A few good examples for use of USTAINIT are renewing an old floor, to brighten the dull grout on your countertops, any remodeling jobs, preparing a property for sale, changing out that pink grout for an appealing sandstone color, etc. On a "new grout installation", USTAINIT is used to correct color issues due to curing problems with the grout. -

Q. Can I change the color of my grout?
A. Yes. USTAINIT allows you to easily change and rejuvenate any existing grout color. -
Q. If my grout joint is a dark charcoal color, can I change this color to a light off white color?
A. Yes, because USTAINIT penetrates the grout. It has tremendous hiding power to change dark colors to a light color. If the color change is extremely drastic (black to white), two applications maybe necessary. (Note: The second application may appear painted on, as it cannot penetrate like the first coat.) -
Q. If my grout joints were previously sealed with a grout sealer, can I still use USTAINIT?
A. Yes. USTAINIT will adhere to any grout joint that has been sealed with a water based grout sealer. However, this may look as if it were painted on. USTAINIT recommends the use of a grout sealer stripper before staining; this will open up the pores of the grout and allow USTAINIT to penetrate for a "natural" look. -
Q. What kind of stripper do I use to take the sealer off my grout joints for USTAINIT to work correctly?
A. All grout sealers are different, but the base for each is generally a solvent or latex/acrylic. This determines what will break down the sealer to open the pores of the grout. USTAINIT recommends contacting the sealer manufacturer for the correct sealer stripper. -
Q. If I remove the grout sealer, do I loose my protection from soil or spills that may cause a stain?
A. No. USTAINIT has the ability to change/rejuvenate colors and seal at the same time. Most grout sealers on the market today promote resistant to staining, giving the homeowner a small window to clean up spills or soils before it actually stains. USTAINIT penetrates in to create a durable layer of protection that prevents soils and spills from absorbing into your grout joints. By using neutral based cleaners, common household spills can be wiped away leaving the grout looking like the day it was installed. -
Q. On what applications can I use USTAINIT?
A. USTAINIT can be used in interior or exterior applications on Portland cement or epoxy-based grouts. Some surface areas for example are floors, countertops, bathtubs, showers, fireplaces, bars or any where grout joints are placed. (Note: Epoxy-based grouts are nonporous, USTAINIT may look painted on.) -
Q. Do I need to worry about staining the tile or walls with USTAINIT?
A. Caution should always be taken to make sure ceramic or stone tiles are not susceptible to staining. Always do a test in an inconspicuous area to determine any issues. We do recommend that you use a low adhesive tape on all baseboards, walls etc. before applying USTAINIT. -
Q. Can I use USTAINIT around or in pools and spas?
A. No. The UV rays and the severe environment that chemicals create in the water of pools and spas are generally too harsh for USTAINIT. -
Q. Can I use USTAINIT on the grout joints of natural stone installations?
A. Yes. Care should be taken here. Stones and granites can be porous and should be sealed before USTAINIT is applied. In addition, the polish on some stones or granites can be affected from the scrubbing in the application. USTAINIT recommends that a test area be done in an inconspicuous area prior to use to determine proper use. -
Q. Do I need to clean my grout before applying USTAINIT?
A. USTAINIT recommends that the grout joint be clean, dry and free of any dirt, grease or oil before applying USTAINIT. Any neutral based cleaner will work to achieve this (scrub brush may be necessary). -
Q. Can I use USTAINIT over newly installed grout that has mottled in color?
A. This is a common problem in the grout industry and USTAINIT offers a quick and inexpensive cure to this issue. With this in mind, though, USTAINIT recommends you wait a minimum of 14 days after the installation to allow for sufficient hydration of the grout joint. -
Q. If I don't like the USTAINIT color I applied, can I stain over it?
A. Yes. USTAINIT can be applied over itself to change an already stained color. Just remember, it may look painted on and if you are going from very dark to very light you may need to apply twice. -
Q. How do I clean cured USTAINIT off a grout joint if a mistake is made?
A. Any paint stripper for latex based paints will break down USTAINIT. A gel type stripping product is recommended for accurate application, but use caution as paint strippers can cause harm to some surfaces. "Fully read and understand the instructions and hazards on any paint stripper product". -
Q. Is USTAINIT a water clean-up product?
A. Yes. Water or water combined with a neutral based soap works well to clean any application tools. -
Q. What is the recommended application temperature for USTAINIT?
A. For best results, apply USTAINIT when temperatures are above 40°F and rising, but not above 95°F. -
Q. How long does it take for USTAINIT to dry?
A. USTAINIT is ready for surface traffic in 24 hours. Keep this area dry for at least 48 hours and avoid direct scrubbing of the grout joints for 20 days to allow USTAINIT to reach maximum durability. -
Q. How long does it generally take to complete a USTAINIT project?
A. With USTAINIT's ease of use, most projects are completed in one day. -
Q. How do I maintain my USTAINIT floor?
A. Neutral based cleaners are ideal for most household maintenance issues. Avoid harsh cleaners such as bleach, ammonia and vinegar as these may damage the grout joint. -
Q. How long will USTAINIT last?
A. If applied and maintained correctly, USTAINIT will typically last 10 to 15 years. -
